Lansing, MI – Drivers traveling westbound through Ingham County can expect daily delays starting Monday as a major resurfacing project begins on I-96.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), lane closures will take place from Meridian Road to M-52 (Stockbridge Road) beginning June 16 as part of a resurfacing project scheduled to continue through mid-July. Work will be conducted daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes due to expected delays.

The $2.4 million investment is part of ongoing infrastructure improvements across Michigan and is expected to support 23 jobs. MDOT notes that the project will enhance driving safety by creating a smoother road surface. The area impacted includes the communities of Okemos and Williamston.

“This is another important step in improving the quality of Michigan roads and boosting our economy through job creation,” said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in a statement shared by MDOT. She emphasized that the project is part of a broader effort to repair or replace nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges statewide.

MDOT urges drivers to remain patient and alert while traveling through the work zone and reminds the public that closing lanes is necessary to protect both motorists and construction crews.

Motorists are advised to plan for longer commute times and monitor traffic updates throughout the duration of the project.
