Lansing, MI – Commercial drivers across Michigan will face new weight limits beginning Tuesday evening as seasonal road protections take effect statewide.

Spring weight restrictions will be imposed at 6 p.m. Tuesday on all state trunkline highways, including I, M and US routes, in designated areas stretching from the Indiana and Ohio borders north to portions of U.S. 10 and east toward Standish in Arenac County. The annual restrictions are designed to protect roadways from damage during seasonal thaw conditions.
According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, the restrictions apply from the southern state borders north to and including U.S. 10 from the M-116 intersection in Ludington in Mason County east to U.S. 127 in Clare County. The limits then extend north on U.S. 127 to M-61 and east along M-61 to its intersection with U.S. 23 in Standish.
State officials said the vast majority of Michigan roads are designated as “all-season” routes and are built to withstand heavier loads year-round. On routes marked as all-season — identified in green and gold on MDOT’s Truck Operators Map — there will be no reduction in legal axle weights.
Weight restrictions are typically implemented each spring when thawing frost weakens pavement and roadbeds, making them more susceptible to damage from heavy vehicles. By lowering allowable axle weights, transportation officials aim to reduce long-term repair costs and preserve roadway conditions.
Drivers and commercial carriers are encouraged to review updated route maps and plan accordingly to avoid fines or delays. MDOT officials said enforcement will begin promptly at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Additional updates and maps are available through MDOT’s official website and social media channels.
