Muskegon, MI – Drivers across Muskegon County can expect increased traffic enforcement this month as authorities focus on distracted driving violations during April’s National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

The campaign aims to remind motorists that Michigan law requires drivers to operate vehicles hands-free and avoid using handheld electronic devices while driving.

According to the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office, deputies will conduct additional traffic enforcement throughout April targeting drivers allegedly using phones or other electronic devices while operating vehicles. Officials say the increased patrols are intended to reduce crashes linked to distracted driving.

Michigan’s hands-free law makes it illegal for drivers to manually use or hold a cell phone or other mobile electronic device while driving. Authorities say this includes making or answering calls, sending or reading texts or emails, watching or recording videos, browsing the internet, using social media, or entering information into navigation systems while behind the wheel.

Even when a phone is mounted to a dashboard or connected to a vehicle system, drivers are limited to a single touch to activate a feature. Officials recommend voice commands or fully hands-free systems when communication is necessary.

Under Michigan law, a first violation can bring a $100 fine or 16 hours of community service. A second or subsequent violation can result in a $250 fine or 24 hours of community service. Drivers who commit three violations within three years may be required to complete a driving improvement course.

Authorities say penalties can become more severe if a distracted driver allegedly causes a crash.

Law enforcement officials say the enforcement push is meant to encourage safer driving habits and remind motorists that focusing on the road can prevent serious traffic incidents.
