Coloma, MI – Drivers traveling through Van Buren County should plan ahead for detours starting Monday as a key stretch of M-40 near Gobles is set to close for a multi-month infrastructure project.
According to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), beginning Monday, June 16, M-40 and 24th Avenue will be fully closed for construction to replace the Brandywine Creek culvert. The project is expected to last through Friday, Sept. 26, 2025.
Traffic on M-40 will be rerouted via M-43, County Road 653 and County Road 388. Meanwhile, 24th Avenue traffic will detour to 36th Street.
The $2.1 million project, led by Hoffman Bros. Inc., includes culvert replacement, hot-mix asphalt reconstruction, guardrail improvements, drainage upgrades, and the installation of new pavement markings and signage.
MDOT reports the project will not only improve roadway safety and reliability, but also contribute to the long-term stability of Brandywine Lake’s water levels. The new culvert is expected to last between 50 to 100 years.
Officials estimate the project will directly and indirectly support around 20 jobs, based on economic modeling tied to the infrastructure investment.
Motorists are encouraged to allow extra time for travel and follow posted detour signage throughout the construction period.
