LANSING, Mich. – Drivers traveling through Eaton County should prepare for delays next week as the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced single-lane closures on I-96.

According to MDOT, eastbound and westbound I-96 between Lansing Road and Creyts Road will be reduced to one lane starting Monday, Aug. 25, through Friday, Aug. 29, for rebuilding work. The closures are part of a three-year, $44 million investment to reconstruct bridges and roadway sections along I-96.

The project includes major repairs to eastbound and westbound bridges over Billwood Highway, the Grand River, M-99 and Washington Avenue. MDOT said most of the work was completed during 2023 and 2024, with road surface improvements and crossover removals scheduled this year.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer emphasized the importance of the effort in a statement, noting that nearly 24,500 lane miles of road and 1,900 bridges will be rebuilt, repaired or replaced by the end of the construction season. She said the work is intended to create good-paying, local jobs while ensuring safe travel for Michigan drivers.

The project is part of the state’s Rebuilding Michigan program, which targets critical highways and bridges carrying the highest traffic volumes. Officials said the investment aims to extend the lifespan of key roadways and strengthen Michigan’s infrastructure for years to come.

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra time when traveling through Eaton County during the scheduled closures, as backups are expected.
