GAYLORD, Mich. – Drivers in Bellaire will encounter a new traffic pattern beginning Wednesday, as the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) launches a trial four-way stop at the intersection of M-88 and Cayuga Street/Bridge Street.
According to MDOT, the trial is designed to improve safety and reduce confusion for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists. Currently, traffic traveling through on M-88 does not stop at the intersection, which includes a sharp 90-degree turn for highway traffic. Officials said the layout has contributed to crashes, delays for side-street drivers, and limited safe opportunities for crosswalk use in the downtown area.
“Changing this intersection to a four-way stop is intended to improve drivers’ understanding of traffic movement and provide more safe crossing options for pedestrians,” said Andrew Krzisinik, MDOT Gaylord Transportation Service Center Traffic and Safety Engineer. “Beginning this trial ahead of the Labor Day weekend will give us a good indication of how this change affects traffic flow during times of peak travel.”
Stop signs will be added for westbound and southbound M-88 traffic approaching the intersection. There is currently no scheduled end date for the trial, which MDOT said will continue as long as traffic flow and safety are not negatively affected.
The department will monitor traffic conditions and driver response during the trial period before making a final decision on whether the change becomes permanent.
