Detroit, Michigan – Scattered thunderstorms could rattle southeast Michigan tonight, bringing damaging winds and large hail between 8 p.m. and 1 a.m., according to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac.

A marginal risk for severe weather has been issued across much of lower Michigan, including Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Flint, and Ann Arbor. According to the NWS, isolated strong storms may produce wind gusts exceeding 55 mph and hailstones up to one inch in diameter. The strongest activity is expected during the late evening hours into early Saturday.

Communities in Wayne, Washtenaw, and Oakland counties should remain weather-aware. Power outages and minor property damage are possible, particularly if hail impacts densely populated areas. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and monitor weather alerts.

Drivers should also plan for slick roads during the evening commute or overnight travel, especially along I-94, I-75, and U.S. 23.

This is the first organized severe weather threat for parts of the state in May, signaling the unofficial start of storm season in the region. The NWS advises staying tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts as conditions evolve.

Further updates may be issued if storm development intensifies.
