Marquette, Michigan – A fast-moving line of strong to severe thunderstorms could sweep across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula late Thursday evening, bringing damaging winds and large hail through early Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, the storms are expected to move northeast from Wisconsin between 8 p.m. Thursday and 2 a.m. EDT Friday, with the highest risk across western and central U.P. counties. The primary hazards include wind gusts over 60 mph and hail potentially over an inch in diameter.

Cities such as Ironwood, Escanaba, Marquette, and Houghton lie in the storm’s projected path. Drivers along U.S. Routes 2 and 41 should prepare for sudden wind gusts and potential debris on the road. Isolated power outages are also possible if trees or power lines are downed.

Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, including NOAA radios or smartphone notifications. Those planning to travel or camp should be ready to take shelter quickly if warnings are issued.

Storm chances taper off by early Friday, but additional watches could be posted if the system intensifies. Stay tuned to local updates as Thursday night approaches.
