Bad Axe, Michigan – Drivers across Michigan’s Thumb could encounter slick roads and sharply reduced visibility tonight as a persistent lake effect snow band settles in from Lake Huron, creating hazardous travel conditions into Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through Thursday morning for Huron and Sanilac counties. Lake effect snow is expected to produce widespread accumulations between 3 and 6 inches, with localized totals potentially higher if heavier snow bands stall over the same areas. Winds gusting between 30 and 40 mph will contribute to blowing snow and sudden drops in visibility, at times falling to a half-mile or less.
The snow band is expected to develop this evening across Huron County, including areas near Bad Axe, before extending south into west or central portions of Sanilac County overnight. Road conditions may deteriorate quickly on rural routes and along east–west roadways where drifting snow becomes more pronounced. Both the Wednesday evening drive and the Thursday morning commute could be affected.
Gusty winds combined with fresh snowfall may also lead to snow-covered intersections and reduced traction on untreated roads. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and check conditions through the Michigan Drive Map before heading out.
Snow is expected to gradually push east Thursday morning, though lingering impacts may persist until winds ease and road crews can make progress. Additional advisories could be issued if snow bands intensify or remain stationary longer than expected.
