Grand Rapids, Mich. – Prepare for a volatile stretch of summer weather in southwest Lower Michigan as storms, flooding, and oppressive heat roll in Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, thunderstorms are expected Thursday afternoon and evening, with the strongest downpours hitting between 2 p.m. and midnight. Areas along I-96 and U.S. 131 could see water ponding and poor visibility during the evening commute. Thunderstorms could linger into Friday morning.
Heavy rainfall rates and repeated storms may cause localized flooding, especially in low-lying spots. Some totals could exceed one inch if storms track the same route. Drivers should slow down during heavy downpours and avoid flooded roads.
Heat is also a growing concern. The heat index is forecast to climb toward 98–100°F on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, drink water regularly, and check on older adults.
Spotter activation will not be needed, but those in Kent, Ottawa, Barry, and Allegan counties should stay alert for evolving conditions into early next week.
Looking ahead, the weather stays active:
