Marquette, Michigan – Canadian wildfire smoke and a string of thunderstorms are setting up a hazy and unsettled stretch of summer weather across Upper Michigan heading into the holiday weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, smoke from Canadian wildfires may reach ground level Thursday and again through early next week, creating health concerns for sensitive groups. Meanwhile, thunderstorms are possible Friday evening and again on Tuesday, posing risks to outdoor July Fourth plans and weekend travel, particularly along US-41 and M-28.

Thursday brings sunny skies and a high near 68°F despite the haze. But by Independence Day, Marquette could see temperatures soar to 84°F under mostly sunny skies — with a 20% chance of showers creeping in after 2 p.m. South winds may gust up to 20 mph. Saturday continues the warming trend with a high near 87°F and a 60–70% chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. Sunday stays cloudy with scattered showers and a cooler high around 67°F.

Health officials recommend limiting outdoor activity during hazy periods, especially for children, seniors, and anyone with respiratory issues. Drivers should watch for reduced visibility and wet roads during passing storms.

The NWS says more storms could return Tuesday afternoon, keeping conditions unsettled into next week. No weather spotter activation is anticipated at this time.
