Grand Rapids, Mich. – Sweltering summer heat will grip much of central and southwest Michigan Tuesday, with triple-digit heat indices and evening thunderstorms threatening Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Lansing commuters.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday, with “feels-like” temperatures reaching up to 101°F in Kent, Ottawa, and surrounding counties. Residents along the I-96 corridor should limit outdoor activity and hydrate frequently.

Tuesday afternoon will bring scattered thunderstorms, some possibly strong, with winds gusting up to 30 mph and a 49% chance of rainfall after 2 p.m. Storms could affect travel and evening plans in cities like Big Rapids, Battle Creek, and Holland.

The Michigan Department of Environment has also extended an Air Quality Alert for Allegan, Muskegon, and Van Buren counties. Ozone levels remain unhealthy for sensitive groups, especially during peak afternoon hours.

Safety tips include drinking water often, checking on elderly neighbors, and keeping pets hydrated. Avoid mowing or using gas-powered equipment until after sunset to reduce ozone.

Looking ahead, thunderstorms continue through Thursday, with temperatures holding in the high 80s. Friday and Saturday trend drier, though warm.
