Detroit, MI – Thunderstorms with damaging winds and hail are likely across southeast Michigan between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. today, prompting a Slight Risk warning for severe weather across the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, isolated to scattered strong storms will develop late this afternoon and evening. Some storms could produce wind gusts up to 60 mph, hail up to 1 inch, and isolated tornadoes. Storm movement is expected to track east around 25 mph.

Cities including Detroit, Ann Arbor, Lansing, and Monroe could see dangerous conditions during the evening commute. Localized flooding may develop, especially in areas with poor drainage. Emergency managers urge residents to stay alert, have weather notifications enabled, and avoid outdoor plans during peak storm hours.

High-impact hazards include large hail, damaging straight-line winds, and the potential for brief tornadoes, particularly in multicell storm clusters. This pattern mirrors similar July outbreaks seen in 2019 and 2021.

Thunderstorm activity is expected to taper off after 10 p.m., but additional updates or warnings may be issued later in the evening as conditions evolve.
