Mount Clemens, MI – A phone scam targeting families of inmates in Macomb County has prompted a public warning from the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), after at least one resident was misled into sending money under false pretenses.
According to the MCSO, the incident occurred last week when a scammer posing as “Deputy Andrew Daniels” contacted a woman about a relative set to be released from the Macomb County Jail. The caller falsely claimed that an ankle tether deposit was required before the release and instructed the victim to send funds using Chime gift cards.
The scam appeared credible, authorities said, because the victim’s family member was indeed scheduled for release, and the caller referenced the legitimate jail payment system, TouchPay Communications. All interactions took place over phone and email, with no face-to-face communication.
When the victim arrived at the jail, she was informed that no payment was required and that no such deputy worked for the department.
The MCSO reports three additional scam attempts involving similar claims around tether monitoring fees and prepaid card payments. Officials say these incidents are under investigation and encourage the public to verify any requests for payments related to inmate release directly with the jail or law enforcement.
Residents are urged to be cautious, especially when payment is requested via gift cards or electronic money transfer, and to report suspicious calls to the sheriff’s office immediately.
