DETROIT, Mich. – Residents across Southeast Michigan should prepare for a significant severe weather event on Wednesday, with the potential for damaging winds in excess of 70 mph, large hail, and even isolated tornadoes. The threat comes as a potent storm system is set to move through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, an “Enhanced Risk” for severe thunderstorms has been issued for a large portion of the area, including the cities of Detroit, Ann Arbor, Jackson, and Adrian. This updated outlook indicates a higher probability of severe weather capable of producing significant wind gusts. Storms are expected to develop Wednesday afternoon and continue into the evening hours.

Ahead of Wednesday’s main event, Tuesday will bring partly sunny skies with a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., followed by another chance after 2 p.m. Wednesday will see showers and thunderstorms becoming likely, especially after 2 p.m., with some storms capable of producing heavy rainfall. Residents should secure loose outdoor objects, such as patio furniture and trash cans, to prevent them from becoming projectiles in high winds. It is also advised to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and to know your family’s emergency plan.

The unsettled weather will briefly clear out for the Juneteenth holiday on Thursday, which is expected to be mostly clear with a low around 64 degrees. Looking ahead to the weekend, sunny skies are anticipated to return, promising pleasant conditions for any outdoor activities.
