Marquette, Mich. – Strong storms packing winds up to 70 mph and hail the size of ping pong balls are expected across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and parts of Wisconsin and Iowa through 10 p.m. EDT Monday, prompting a widespread Severe Thunderstorm Watch.

According to the National Weather Service and the Storm Prediction Center, the threat zone spans from Marquette and Dickinson through Luce County in Michigan, and as far south as Dubuque, Iowa. The storms are forming in clusters, with some developing bowing structures capable of producing damaging straight-line winds and isolated large hail.

In Michigan, residents in Marquette, Iron Mountain, and Escanaba should remain indoors as frequent lightning and dangerous gusts roll through. Wisconsin cities including Appleton, Madison, and La Crosse are also under threat, along with parts of Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. The storms could disrupt evening travel, down tree limbs, and briefly knock out power in rural and urban areas alike.

Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel, secure outdoor items, and charge mobile devices ahead of potential outages. Stay tuned to local alerts and be prepared to take shelter quickly if warnings are issued.

Storms are expected to persist through late evening, with additional advisories possible depending on storm development.
