Traverse City, Mich. – Damaging thunderstorms are expected to sweep through northwest Lower Michigan tonight, with wind gusts up to 60 MPH threatening power outages and downed trees between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Level 2 “Slight Risk” for severe weather covers cities including Traverse City, Gaylord, Alpena, and Escanaba. Frequent lightning and heavy rain may lead to localized flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas during the overnight hours.
Wind is the main concern, but small hail and an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out, especially across Emmet, Charlevoix, and Cheboygan counties. US-131 and M-32 could see slick driving conditions late tonight. Residents should secure loose outdoor items, charge phones, and avoid travel during the storm window if possible.
This is the region’s most significant severe weather risk so far this month. It follows an unusually dry June, raising concern for sudden urban flooding as rain struggles to absorb.
Storms are expected to exit before dawn, but additional advisories could follow depending on overnight developments.
