Mount Clemens, MI – The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) is reporting a surge in dangerous car surfing incidents, linked to a viral social media challenge. This reckless activity involves individuals riding on the exterior of moving vehicles, posing severe injury risks. Recently, MCSO responded to three such incidents involving juveniles in New Haven, Shelby Township, and Romeo. The injured parties were hospitalized, and drivers face serious charges. Sheriff Anthony Wickersham urges the community to recognize the extreme dangers and legal repercussions associated with car surfing.
On June 21, a juvenile fell from the rooftop of a Kia Optima in New Haven, suffering a head laceration and multiple abrasions. The juvenile driver was charged with reckless driving. On July 19, another juvenile fell from a Ford Escape at Iroquois Middle School, sustaining a skull fracture and brain bleed. The driver, charged with OWI causing serious injury and reckless driving, admitted the stunt was meant to be fun. Lastly, on July 21, a juvenile at Romeo High School fell from a Dodge Challenger, resulting in head injuries. The driver was cited for reckless driving.
“The MCSO takes these incidents of car surfing very seriously,” stated Sheriff Wickersham. “Participants do not realize they become projectiles, hitting cement or asphalt at 30-50 miles an hour. No thrill is worth the risk.” He urges the community to speak out against such dangerous activities and to educate others about the severe risks involved.
