Lansing, MI – Michigan educators now have access to three new school safety toolkits developed by the Michigan State Police (MSP) Office of School Safety to strengthen safety planning and crisis response statewide.

According to the Michigan State Police, the free, federally funded toolkits are designed to help K–12 schools create proactive, well-rounded safety strategies. Each toolkit includes step-by-step planning materials, defined staff roles, and proven emergency management practices.

“Strengthening your school safety plan is one of the best proactive moves you can make,” said Col. James F. Grady II, director of the Michigan State Police. “Each toolkit provides specific guidance to help educators and administrators respond confidently and effectively in a range of situations.”

The toolkits—available online through the MSP Office of School Safety website—cover three main areas:

  • School Crisis Communication Planning: Helping schools manage messaging and reduce confusion during emergencies.
  • Emergency Preparedness for School Events: Assisting staff with safety before, during, and after school-sponsored events.
  • Best Practices for Investigating Student Online Activity: Guiding educators in safely managing online incidents and digital threats.

The resources were developed with support from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance under the FY19 STOP School Violence Program.
