Iron Mountain, MI – A major resurfacing project is set to begin Thursday on M-69 and US-141 in Michigan’s Dickinson and Iron counties, aiming to improve road quality and safety for local drivers.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), crews will start work July 31 on approximately 2.5 miles of roadway, including M-69 from west of Lake Mary Road to west of Mansfield Cutoff Road, and on US-141 from the state line to US-2. The $737,000 project involves milling, crack filling, resurfacing, surface sealing, new pavement markings, shoulder gravel, and rumble strip installation.

Motorists should expect single-lane closures with traffic regulators during the project, which is scheduled to wrap up by mid-September. Closest affected communities include Iron Mountain and Crystal Falls.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said in a statement that this project is part of broader efforts to improve roads statewide, emphasizing its importance for local economies and safety. “By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired, or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying, local jobs without raising taxes,” Whitmer said.

MDOT notes that the resurfacing will support an estimated seven jobs, based on economic modeling. The agency also states that the improvements will extend the lifespan of the roadway, provide a smoother ride, and increase safety for motorists.
