Battle Creek, MI – A 30-year-old male inmate attempted to flee custody during a medical appointment at a local hospital Sunday morning in Calhoun County.

According to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 7:56 a.m. when the prisoner, who was being treated for a hand injury, allegedly escaped on foot from the hospital while in the custody of sheriff’s deputies.

Deputies immediately gave chase and called for backup. With support from the Battle Creek Police Department and assistance from the Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch Authority, a perimeter was quickly established. The inmate was apprehended at approximately 8:04 a.m. and returned to custody without further incident.

The man was originally in custody on one count of Resist and Obstruct/Assault on a corrections officer. Authorities say additional charges are expected to be filed in connection with Sunday’s attempted escape.

Law enforcement officials confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.
