Michigan starts the day under a hard, silent freeze as brittle air stings exposed skin and car doors creak open slowly. Breath hangs in the air, and even brief errands feel demanding.

A Hazardous Weather Outlook remains in effect for southeast Michigan as bitter cold dominates the region. According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, wind chills this morning range between 10 and 15 degrees below zero. Similar cold is expected again Friday and Saturday mornings, extending the winter stress on people and infrastructure.

In Detroit, temperatures sit near 9 degrees early, but light winds drive wind chills closer to minus 11. Roads may look dry, yet flash freezing remains a concern where snowmelt refroze overnight. Drivers along I-75, I-94, and I-96 should watch for slick ramps and shaded stretches, especially during the morning commute.

Sunshine builds later today, though it brings little warmth. Highs struggle to reach the mid-teens. Tonight turns sharply colder again, with lows dipping below zero in suburbs north and west of the city. Wind chills rebound into dangerous territory by early morning.

Friday and Saturday stay cold but quieter, with mostly sunny skies. Afternoon highs climb slowly into the teens, then low 20s by Sunday. Even so, temperatures remain well below normal for late January. The prolonged cold raises concerns for frozen pipes, car battery failures, and increased heating demand.

By early next week, temperatures begin a gradual recovery, though winter remains firmly in control across the Great Lakes. Meteorologists continue to monitor broader storm patterns that could reintroduce snow chances beyond the weekend.

Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and cover exposed skin. Bring pets inside and check on elderly neighbors during the coldest periods.

  • Friday: Mostly sunny, high near 12

  • Sunday: Mostly sunny, high near 21
