Detroit, Michigan – Boaters on Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair face hazardous conditions this morning, with a Small Craft Advisory in effect until 10 a.m. Strong winds and significant waves are impacting the waters, posing risks for smaller vessels.

According to the US National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac Michigan, the Small Craft Advisory for Outer Saginaw Bay to Harbor Beach remains in effect until 4 p.m. today. For Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair, the advisory is set to expire at 10 a.m.

Southwest to north winds are blowing at 15 to 20 knots, with gusts reaching 25 to 30 knots across Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair, and the northern thumb of Michigan. Wave heights are expected to be between 3 to 4 feet, with maximum waves potentially reaching 5 to 7 feet, making travel difficult and dangerous for small crafts. Individuals planning to be on these waters should consider delaying their trips.

Mariners should secure all loose items on their vessels and ensure all safety equipment is readily accessible. Conditions are expected to improve on Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair after 10 a.m., but the Saginaw Bay area will continue to experience hazardous conditions through the afternoon. Additional advisories could be issued if conditions worsen.
