New Buffalo, MI – Boaters along Lake Michigan’s southeastern shoreline face hazardous conditions as a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. EST Friday, followed by a Small Craft Advisory beginning 3 p.m. Friday through 9 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Northern Indiana.

The dense fog is reducing visibility to one to two nautical miles or less, creating dangerous navigation conditions for small vessels. Later in the day, northeast winds of 15 to 20 knots, with gusts up to 25 knots, are expected to generate waves between 3 and 7 feet.

The affected areas include New Buffalo, Michigan, to St. Joseph, Michigan, and Michigan City, Indiana, to New Buffalo. The Small Craft Advisory urges inexperienced mariners, particularly those in smaller boats, to avoid navigation during these hazardous conditions.

Mariners who must travel should exercise caution, use fog signals, ensure running lights are on, and rely on radar and compass navigation.
