Detroit, MI – Thunderstorms over Lake Huron are posing a marine hazard overnight, with gusts reaching 40 knots and potential small hail impacting vessels across eastern Michigan waters.
According to the National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac, the Special Marine Warning remains in effect until 3:15 a.m. EDT Saturday. The affected areas include Inner and Outer Saginaw Bay, Port Austin to Harbor Beach, and stretches from Harbor Beach to Port Sanilac, extending offshore to the U.S./Canada border.
Radar indicated a line of strong storms at 2:18 a.m., moving east at 40 knots. The system was located west of Central Lake Huron Buoy and near Port Austin and Gravelly Shoals. Impacts include high winds and rapidly building waves, creating hazardous conditions for small craft.
Storms are expected to pass through key locations including Port Austin and Caseville around 2:25 a.m., Bay Port at 2:30 a.m., Port Hope near 2:45 a.m., and Harbor Beach close to 3 a.m.
Boaters in these zones are urged to move to safe harbor immediately. Winds of this strength may capsize small vessels or make navigation extremely dangerous. Mariners should monitor NOAA Weather Radio for updates and remain on alert through early Saturday.
