Detroit, MI – Boaters and beachgoers across Michigan are being urged to use caution as a series of Small Craft Advisories and Beach Hazard Statements go into effect Tuesday and persist through Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac, the advisories cover Lakes Huron, St. Clair, and Erie, where strong northeast winds and hazardous wave conditions are expected to develop.
Small Craft Advisories are active in Outer Saginaw Bay to Harbor Beach, Inner Saginaw Bay and Harbor Beach to Port Huron, and Michigan waters of Lake Erie. The advisories began Tuesday afternoon and will remain in effect until Wednesday morning, with some areas extending into early Wednesday afternoon.
Beach Hazard Statements were also issued for Huron, Tuscola, and Sanilac counties. Forecasters warn swimmers of dangerous currents and high surf conditions lasting into Wednesday morning.
Winds are forecast to range from 15 to 20 knots, with gusts up to 30 knots, while waves are expected to reach 3 to 7 feet, occasionally peaking near 10 feet. The hazardous conditions could impact small watercraft, swimmers, and anyone planning shoreline activity.
The National Weather Service advises avoiding swimming and boating in the affected areas until conditions improve.
