Detroit, MI – The National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac has issued a Gale Warning for northern Lake Huron this morning as strong northwest winds and large waves develop across the Great Lakes region.
The warning covers Lake Huron north of Sturgeon Point from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, with sustained northwest winds of 25 to 30 knots and gusts reaching 35 to 40 knots. Waves are expected to build between 6 and 9 feet, with occasional peaks up to 13 feet.
In addition, Small Craft Advisories are in effect for several areas along the Lake Huron nearshore waters, including Saginaw Bay and Port Huron, lasting through late Monday afternoon. Boaters are urged to remain in port and exercise caution as hazardous conditions are likely on open waters.
The National Weather Service warns that these winds and waves could make navigation dangerous for small and medium vessels. Conditions are expected to gradually improve by Monday evening as winds ease and shift westward.
