Marquette, Michigan – Boaters on Lake Superior and northern Green Bay should expect hazardous conditions through Saturday, with dense fog this morning and strong wind gusts set to follow.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. EDT Friday, reducing visibility to less than one nautical mile from Cedar River to Rock Island Passage, and along the Lake Superior shoreline from Marquette to Whitefish Point. A Small Craft Advisory will go into effect from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday for areas including Green Bay, Marquette, Munising, and Grand Marais, where gusts may reach 30 knots and waves could build to 3 feet.
Inexperienced mariners and small vessel operators are urged to remain in port. Foggy conditions could make radar navigation difficult this morning, while Saturday’s winds may create choppy, dangerous waters.
Use running lights and radar if travel is essential today, and delay small craft activity until winds calm late Saturday. This pattern mirrors similar early-summer marine advisories seen in June 2022, though gusts this year may prove stronger.
Warnings remain in effect through Saturday afternoon. Additional advisories could follow as weather patterns shift.
