Monroe County, MI – A man was rescued from a pond in Summerfield Township after driving his Jeep through a field and crashing into the water late Monday night.
Monroe County Central Dispatch received a 911 call at 12:04 a.m. from a resident on Lulu Road reporting cries for help from a nearby pond. The caller mentioned an unknown man was struggling in the water.
According to Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough, Deputy Shawna Hester responded promptly and found the man about 20 feet from shore, struggling to stay afloat. Deputy Hester, with assistance from a homeowner who provided a flotation device, successfully rescued the man and brought him to shore. He was then transported to ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital for treatment.
While investigating the scene, deputies discovered tire tracks leading from a field into the pond, suggesting that the man had driven through the field before crashing his Jeep into the water. Conflicting information from the rescued individual left uncertainty about whether anyone else was involved.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, with help from the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, recovered the unoccupied black Jeep Wrangler from the pond.
