La Porte County, IN – A Michigan man is facing felony charges after allegedly fleeing police in a stolen Porsche and leading deputies on a high-speed chase along Interstate 80/90 in Indiana Thursday evening.
According to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, the pursuit began around 5:15 p.m. when a deputy observed a Porsche driving aggressively near the 53-mile marker of I-80/90, tailgating a commercial motor vehicle. When the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the Porsche reportedly sped up and refused to pull over.
The chase intensified near the 49-mile marker as traffic slowed due to construction. Authorities say the Porsche weaved between vehicles and struck the rear of a van while approaching the SR 39 exit before veering off the road and into a ditch.
The driver then allegedly fled on foot into a nearby wooded area. Deputies quickly established a perimeter near County Road 450 North and captured the suspect shortly after.
The suspect was identified as 31-year-old Shay A. Palmer of Muskegon, Michigan. He was taken to a hospital for medical evaluation before being booked into the La Porte County Jail.
Palmer now faces multiple charges including:
- Auto Theft – Level 6 Felony
- Resisting Law Enforcement with a Motor Vehicle – Level 6 Felony
- Resisting Law Enforcement – A Misdemeanor
- Reckless Driving – B Misdemeanor
He remains in custody on a $755 cash-only bond. No injuries were reported in the incident. Authorities emphasize that all charges are allegations and Palmer is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
