Gaylord, MI – Holiday travelers across northern Michigan are being warned to prepare for another round of lake effect snow beginning Wednesday and continuing through Friday, according to a new alert from the National Weather Service (NWS) in Gaylord. With one of the busiest travel periods of the year underway, forecasters say conditions may quickly become hazardous, especially in traditional snowbelt regions.
According to the National Weather Service, accumulating snow and periods of blowing snow are expected to develop Wednesday and persist into the end of the week. Forecasters note that rainfall early Wednesday could transition to snow as colder air arrives, creating a messy and potentially slippery start to the holiday travel window. The timing of the most intense lake effect bands is still uncertain, but the agency expects the highest impacts between Wednesday night and Friday.
Officials say storm track variability could shift which areas see the heaviest snowfall. Communities along Lake Michigan and Lake Superior remain the most likely to receive significant lake effect bands, though areas farther inland may experience reduced visibility and slick roads as well. Drivers are urged to keep safety kits in their vehicles, allow extra time for travel, and closely follow updated advisories through Thanksgiving.
More information will be issued by the National Weather Service as confidence increases in snowfall totals and band placement over the next 24–48 hours.
