Michigan – Northern Michigan residents should prepare for lake effect snow and dangerously low wind chills starting Monday. Areas near Gaylord, Rogers City, and Whitefish Point are expected to see an additional 2-4 inches of snow, creating hazardous travel conditions. Wind chills as low as -15°F will make outdoor exposure risky.

According to the National Weather Service, snow showers will continue through Monday evening, particularly along M-75, US-131, and near the Lake Michigan shoreline. Visibility may drop significantly in heavier snow bands, and roadways could become slick. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and avoid non-essential trips during peak snow periods.

Cold conditions are forecast to persist through midweek. Monday night’s lows will dip near -6°F in some areas, with additional snow accumulations of up to 3 inches likely. Tuesday’s high temperatures will struggle to reach 5°F, while wind chills remain in the negative teens.

Looking ahead, Wednesday will bring a slight improvement, with highs reaching 13°F, though more snow showers are possible into Thursday. Residents are encouraged to bundle up, check on vulnerable neighbors, and ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies.

This prolonged cold snap may lead to ice jams on rivers, increasing the risk of localized flooding. Spotter activation is not anticipated at this time, but residents are advised to stay updated with the latest forecasts on weather.gov/gaylord.
