Niles, Michigan – Rain could transition to a wintry mix along the Michigan–Indiana state line Wednesday, potentially creating slick travel conditions near the Interstate 94 corridor.

According to the National Weather Service, a midweek storm system is forecast to bring steady rain to southwest Michigan and northern Indiana before colder air moves into the region. As temperatures fall toward freezing, rain may mix with or briefly change to sleet or wet snow, particularly late Wednesday into the evening hours.

Communities near the state line — including Niles and New Buffalo in Michigan and South Bend and Mishawaka in Indiana — could experience periods of mixed precipitation. While widespread accumulation is not currently expected, even light sleet or wet snow may reduce visibility and create slippery stretches on untreated roads, bridges and overpasses.

Forecasters say the timing of the transition from rain to mixed precipitation will depend on how quickly colder air filters into the area. Minor temperature shifts could determine whether most locations remain rain-dominant or see brief slushy accumulation.

Drivers along Interstate 94, U.S. Route 12 and U.S. Route 31 should remain alert for changing road conditions, especially during the late afternoon and evening commute.

Meteorologists advise monitoring updated forecasts as precipitation types and temperatures may fluctuate.

Commuters and students crossing the Michigan–Indiana state line may want to allow extra travel time Wednesday if conditions deteriorate.
