Marquette, MI – A powerful ice storm is set to grip Michigan’s Upper Peninsula starting tonight, threatening travel, power infrastructure, and safety across multiple counties through Sunday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, an Ice Storm Warning remains in effect from 7 p.m. CDT Saturday through 8 p.m. EDT Sunday for much of the central and eastern U.P., including Marquette, Iron, Dickinson, Menominee, Alger, Luce, and Schoolcraft counties.

Forecasters predict widespread snow and sleet accumulations ranging from 1 to 12 inches, with the highest totals expected in northern Marquette County. Ice accumulations could reach up to one-half inch in some areas. Heaviest wintry conditions are forecast between late Saturday night and daytime Sunday.

Travel is expected to be nearly impossible, with dangerous road conditions and severely reduced visibility. Utility disruptions are likely, with ice-laden branches and power lines at risk of snapping under the weight.

Residents are strongly advised to avoid unnecessary travel. Officials recommend stocking vehicles with emergency supplies, including flashlights, food, and water. Power companies across the region are on alert for widespread outages and may experience delays in response due to hazardous road conditions.

This storm marks one of the most significant late-season ice events in recent years for the U.P.
