Detroit, MI – A significant closure of I-94 is set to impact the Detroit area this weekend as the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) begins bridge demolition work on McClellan Avenue. The closure will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, April 11, and continue until 5 a.m. Monday, April 14.

According to MDOT, both directions of I-94 will be closed between I-75 and M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) to accommodate the demolition. Westbound traffic will be detoured via M-3 southbound and I-75 northbound, while eastbound traffic will be diverted via I-75 southbound and M-3 northbound.

In addition, all entrance ramps to westbound I-94 will be closed, along with ramps to eastbound I-94 from Van Dyke Avenue. These ramps are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.

The McClellan Avenue overpass was originally built in 1957 and has since been deemed structurally unsound. MDOT is not replacing the bridge as part of the I-94 modernization project, which includes future upgrades to the I-94/M-3 interchange.

Motorists are advised to plan alternate routes and stay updated on the closures through MDOT’s official channels.
