Battle Creek, MI – A pedestrian was left in critical condition Saturday night following an alleged hit-and-run crash in Pennfield Township, authorities said.
According to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 11:04 p.m. to North Avenue near East Coolidge Avenue, where a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed allegedly struck a man crossing the roadway. The driver reportedly fled the scene without stopping.
Witnesses told deputies a 33-year-old Battle Creek resident was struck and found unconscious in the roadway. Deputies performed life-saving measures until Pennfield Township Fire Department and LifeCare Ambulance paramedics arrived. The man was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
Michigan State Police later located a suspect vehicle with damage consistent with the crash in the 100 block of Eastwood Drive in Battle Creek. Deputies made contact with the driver, identified as a 19-year-old man from Climax. Authorities allege alcohol was a factor.
The suspect was taken into custody and lodged at the Calhoun County Jail. He faces charges of reckless driving causing great bodily harm, operating while intoxicated, and failure to stop and identify at a personal injury accident, deputies said.
The Calhoun Area Multi-Jurisdictional Evidence Team and the Calhoun County Accident Reconstruction Team assisted in the investigation. Support also came from Michigan State Police, Battle Creek Police, Marshall Police, and emergency responders.
