Marquette, MI – Heavy snow and strong winds forced the closure of key highways in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula on Thursday. Whiteout conditions shut down M-28 between M-94 and M-77 and M-94 between Shingleton and Manistique, causing major disruptions.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Marquette issued a Winter Weather Advisory until 7 p.m. Thursday. Lake-effect snow will likely bring 1 to 3 inches of additional accumulation, with some areas receiving up to 5 inches. Winds gusting up to 40 mph have created dangerous conditions, reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile.

Travelers are urged to avoid the affected areas and use alternative routes. Drivers heading east can take U.S.-2 via Skandia and Chatham to Munising. Authorities advise carrying emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water, for those who must travel.

Snowfall rates may exceed an inch per hour during peak times, particularly in the morning. Blowing snow could extend hazardous conditions through Friday evening as drifts impact roadways.

Officials recommend staying updated on the latest forecasts and road conditions before traveling. For ongoing alerts, consult the Michigan Department of Transportation or local weather services.
