Monroe, MI – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the cause of a helicopter crash that occurred in a farmer’s field in London Township on Independence Day. The incident took place near Oelke Rd and Yensch Rd, prompting a swift response from local emergency services.

According to Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough, the crash was reported at approximately 10:43 AM when a citizen called Monroe County Central Dispatch to report a helicopter down near their home. First responders from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, London/Maybee/Raisinville Fire Department, and Monroe County Ambulance arrived promptly at the scene.

Upon arrival, responders found the helicopter with both the pilot and passenger uninjured. The pilot, a 51-year-old resident of Newport, explained that engine trouble began as he was returning to Willow Run Airport. Using autorotation, he managed to control the descent and land safely in the field.

The FAA and the Uniform Services Division are conducting a thorough investigation to determine what caused the engine failure. The pilot’s quick thinking and emergency landing skills were crucial in preventing injuries or further damage.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the crash to contact the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 734-240-7700. The investigation continues as officials work to ensure all safety protocols were followed and identify the mechanical issues that led to the crash. Updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
