Detroit, Michigan – Residents across Southeast Michigan should prepare for a significant shift in weather patterns this week, starting with scattered thunderstorms today and Friday, followed by a substantial heatwave over the weekend and into early next week. The most impactful weather event will be the soaring temperatures, with the heat index expected to reach around 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday and Monday.
According to the US National Weather Service Detroit / Pontiac Michigan, rain and general thunderstorm chances will persist through Thursday afternoon and evening, with additional possibilities on Friday and Saturday. The primary concern shifts to extreme heat and humidity, with high temperatures likely to hit the 90s on Sunday and Monday. These conditions will create heat index values that could make it feel like 100 degrees Fahrenheit or hotter.
Across the region, including cities like Flint, Saginaw, and Pontiac, residents should take precautions against heat-related illnesses. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services recommends drinking plenty of water, avoiding sugary and alcoholic beverages, and limiting outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day. Seek air-conditioned spaces, such as public libraries or cooling centers, if your home lacks adequate cooling. Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, as temperatures can quickly become fatal.
This prolonged period of intense heat is similar to conditions experienced in the region in June of 2024. Residents should monitor local weather alerts for updates, as the National Weather Service issues Heat Advisories when heat index values are expected to exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit for three consecutive hours. Warnings for excessive heat could follow if conditions worsen. This heat event is expected to last through at least Monday, with minimal relief at night.
