Detroit, Michigan – Southeast Michigan is bracing for a dangerous heat wave, with the National Weather Service issuing an Extreme Heat Warning starting 8 a.m. Sunday through 8 p.m. Tuesday. Heat index values are expected to soar as high as 105°F, creating life-threatening conditions for vulnerable populations.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, the current Heat Advisory—already pushing heat index values to 101°F—remains in effect until 8 a.m. Sunday, when it escalates to an Extreme Heat Warning for Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties, including Detroit, Pontiac, and Warren.

Residents are urged to stay indoors during peak heat, check on elderly neighbors, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Cooling centers are being activated across the region—check with local emergency management for locations and hours.

Heat illness can set in rapidly, especially in homes without air conditioning. Avoid closed vehicles, hydrate regularly, and wear loose, light-colored clothing. With heat stress risk high for workers and outdoor events, organizers should consider delaying or relocating activities.

The extreme heat is expected to break late Tuesday, but additional advisories may follow if the heat dome persists across the Great Lakes.
