Detroit, Michigan – A dangerous heat wave is taking aim at southeast Michigan, with temperatures expected to spike into the mid-90s by Thursday and heat indices surpassing 100 degrees across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, the stretch of hot and humid weather begins Tuesday, but intensifies midweek as highs climb into the upper 80s Wednesday and soar to 96°F Thursday. The hottest day will also bring the most oppressive humidity, prompting potential heat-related advisories across metro Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Flint.

Today and Monday offer a brief break, with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s and relatively cooler nights. But by Tuesday, conditions will rapidly shift. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity during peak heat, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable individuals, especially seniors and young children.

Power grids may face strain if air conditioning demand spikes. Local cooling centers could open midweek; residents should monitor municipal alerts and prepare for the possibility of extended heat.

More alerts may be issued as Thursday approaches. Stay tuned to NWS Detroit for updates on excessive heat watches or warnings.
