Detroit, Michigan – Southeast Michigan will swelter through the most intense heat of the week on Thursday, with dangerous temperatures and humidity driving the heat index as high as 104° across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, a heat advisory is expected as the heat index surpasses 100 degrees for areas including Detroit, Ann Arbor, Flint, and Monroe. Highs will climb to the mid-90s during the afternoon, but it will feel even hotter—especially for residents in Howell, Pontiac, and Port Huron, where maximum apparent temperatures could reach 102° to 104°. The heat will be relentless, with overnight lows only dropping to the lower 70s, offering little relief.

Travelers and residents should prepare for potential heat-related illnesses. Officials urge everyone to avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, drink plenty of water, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Power grid strain is possible as air conditioners run continuously, and local utilities recommend charging devices early in the day.

While the heat dominates much of Thursday, a 40-70% chance of scattered showers and strong thunderstorms is forecast for the evening and overnight. Some storms could become severe, bringing heavy rainfall and possible localized flooding—particularly along I-94 and major metro roads.

The excessive heat risk continues until midnight, with more weather updates likely as storms move across the state Thursday night.
