Adrian, MI – Swimmers and visitors to Lake Hudson are being urged to use caution after a suspected harmful algal bloom was detected along the public swimming beach.

According to the Lenawee County Health Department (LCHD), the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) observed the bloom on Sunday, August 31, and immediately posted warning signs along the shoreline to notify residents and beachgoers. Officials said the bloom, often caused by cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, can pose risks to both people and animals.

Health officials recommend avoiding areas where the water appears discolored, has a green sheen, floating scum, or resembles spilled paint. Direct contact with contaminated water can cause rashes, throat irritation, or more serious health issues. Swallowing affected water may lead to flu-like symptoms, gastrointestinal illness, or, in severe cases, harm to the liver and kidneys. Pets are especially vulnerable and may show signs of illness, including vomiting, diarrhea, or difficulty walking, within minutes to hours of exposure.

The LCHD advised the public not to swim, wade, or fish in areas where the algal bloom is visible and to keep pets away from the water. Boating through affected areas is also discouraged due to the possibility of airborne toxin exposure.

Officials stressed that harmful algal blooms can shift quickly and may clear up or spread depending on conditions. The health department said it will continue monitoring the lake and share updates as they become available.

Residents who suspect exposure to the algae are urged to wash thoroughly, monitor for symptoms, and contact a medical provider or veterinarian if illness develops.
