Traverse City, Mich. – Sensitive plants across northern and western Michigan could be damaged early Sunday as temperatures dip into the low 30s, triggering a widespread frost advisory.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Gaylord and Grand Rapids, the frost advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. EDT Sunday for much of Eastern Upper and Northern Lower Michigan. Temperatures are expected to range from the mid-30s to as low as 31°F in some rural valleys.
Counties under advisory include Emmet, Cheboygan, Presque Isle, Otsego, Alpena, and Grand Traverse in the north, as well as Mason, Newaygo, Mecosta, Clare, and Isabella further west and inland. Cities like Gaylord, Ludington, and Mount Pleasant are expected to see the sharpest drops before sunrise.
Cold-sensitive plants, gardens, and early-season crops may be at risk if left uncovered overnight. Residents are urged to bring potted plants indoors or cover gardens with breathable fabric or sheets.
While June frosts are uncommon, they are not unheard of in these regions. Temperatures are forecast to rebound Sunday afternoon, but additional advisories remain possible in elevated areas through Monday.
