Gaylord, Michigan – Heavy rain overnight has put much of Northern Lower Michigan on alert for flooding, with the National Weather Service warning that roads, rivers, and low-lying areas could be underwater through 8 a.m. Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a Flood Watch remains in effect this morning for Kalkaska, Crawford, Oscoda, Alcona, Missaukee, Roscommon, Ogemaw, Iosco, Gladwin, and Arenac counties. Emergency officials are urging residents in these areas—including Houghton Lake, Standish, Grayling, and Tawas City—to monitor local conditions and avoid travel if possible.

Flooding is most likely along creeks, streams, and in poor drainage spots, especially in urban neighborhoods. Major roadways such as M-72 and US-23 could see closures or hazardous driving conditions if waters rise. Residents should avoid walking or driving through flooded streets, and prepare for possible power outages by charging devices and securing valuables.

School buses and essential services may be delayed this morning if conditions worsen. Officials urge anyone living near rivers or flood-prone areas to stay alert for possible Flood Warnings and to take action if waters begin to rise.

The Flood Watch remains in effect until 8 a.m., but additional advisories could follow if rainfall continues or rivers swell.
