Gaylord, Mich. – Residents across northern Michigan should take caution Saturday as an elevated fire danger threatens dry brush areas from Traverse City to Alpena.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, gusty north winds up to 20 mph combined with relative humidity between 20–30% will create dangerous fire conditions. The risk peaks midday Saturday as skies remain clear and temperatures climb into the mid-60s.
Officials urge residents to check with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources before conducting any outdoor burning. Counties including Otsego, Cheboygan, and Presque Isle may see the highest risk, especially in rural zones with dry vegetation from recent warm spells.
With no significant rainfall in the forecast, even a small spark could trigger fast-moving grass fires. Residents are advised to avoid using open flames, properly dispose of cigarette butts, and postpone any backyard burning.
This marks one of the first elevated fire weather days of the season for northern Michigan. The public can check michigan.gov/dnr for county-specific burn restrictions.
Fire danger remains high through Saturday evening, and additional advisories may follow if dry, breezy conditions persist into Sunday.
