Marquette, MI – Bitter arctic air continues to blanket Upper Michigan today, with temperatures plummeting well below zero and wind chills nearing 45 below in some areas. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an extreme cold warning, in effect until 1 p.m. Eastern, with a cold weather advisory following until early Wednesday morning.

According to the NWS, frostbite can occur within minutes on exposed skin. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities, dress in layers, and cover all exposed areas when venturing outside. Wind chills as low as 42 below could make travel hazardous, especially on highways like US-41 and M-28, where poor visibility from lake effect snow may persist through this afternoon.

Temperatures are expected to rise slightly after Wednesday, reaching highs of 17 degrees by Thursday and 22 degrees by Friday. However, lake effect snow will continue to impact the Keweenaw Peninsula and areas around Marquette through midweek, with additional accumulations of 1 to 3 inches likely.

Tonight, expect lows between 5 and 15 below zero with mostly clear skies. Wednesday brings a slight chance of snow showers, especially in the morning, but temperatures will begin to recover, reaching the mid-teens. By the weekend, sunny skies and milder weather will make conditions more manageable.

Stay safe by preparing your home and vehicle for freezing temperatures. Keep emergency kits handy and monitor updates from the NWS for changing conditions.
