Pontiac, MI – A 77-year-old West Bloomfield man died after being struck by a pickup truck while crossing Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Pontiac on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded shortly before 4 p.m. to the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Elm Street following reports of a pedestrian versus vehicle crash. The department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit assisted deputies from the Pontiac Substation in investigating the incident.

Preliminary findings revealed that a 45-year-old Imlay City man was driving a 2022 GMC Sierra with a trailer northbound when the victim, identified as Jehad Alrayess, entered the roadway. Authorities said Alrayess appeared to be lost and may have been attempting to ask for directions when he stepped into the truck’s path.

Alrayess was transported by STAR EMS to McLaren Oakland Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The sheriff’s office said alcohol, drugs, and speed do not appear to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation. This marks the fifth fatal pedestrian crash in Pontiac this year.

Sheriff Michael Bouchard urged both drivers and pedestrians to remain cautious. “We remind drivers to stay alert, especially in residential and high-traffic areas, and for pedestrians to use crosswalks whenever possible,” the department stated in its release.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
