DETROIT, MI – A frosty haze settled across metro Detroit early this morning, the kind that signals winter’s firm arrival across Michigan. The air feels sharp, the pavement glistens with frost, and even the faintest breeze carries that unmistakable December bite.

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac report that temperatures will stay well below freezing through Friday morning, with highs only in the lower 20s today and mid-20s Friday. While skies remain mostly clear, wind chills could dip into the teens — a reminder to bundle up for the morning commute or school drop-offs.

Friday brings a few extra clouds but no significant precipitation, followed by a brief warm-up Saturday when highs return to the low 30s. However, that’s short-lived. Another cold push Sunday night into Monday sets the stage for potential light snow as a weak system tracks across the Great Lakes. For now, any accumulations look minor, but slick roads and black ice could still develop, especially on untreated surfaces and elevated bridges.

Drivers on I-75, I-94, and I-96 should prepare for patchy frost early and icy conditions by late Sunday as moisture increases. These freeze-thaw cycles often lead to thin layers of invisible ice that catch even cautious drivers off guard.

Looking further ahead, long-range models point to a stronger Arctic surge around Dec. 11–17, aligning with early holiday travel — and possibly another round of lake-effect snow for parts of lower Michigan.
