GAYLORD, Mich. – A cold front sweeping across northern Michigan today is set to bring widespread rain and a few thunderstorms, followed by a sharp drop in temperatures overnight. The National Weather Service in Gaylord reports that the best chance for storms will occur late this afternoon and evening, especially across northeast Lower Michigan.

According to the Weather Service, rain showers will continue into tonight before skies clear on Tuesday. Highs today will range from the mid-60s to low 80s, cooling sharply overnight to the mid-40s. Tuesday will feel more like fall, with highs near 58 degrees and a brisk northwest breeze.

Forecasters say the front will usher in a seasonable but cooler air mass, setting the stage for possible frost by early Wednesday and Thursday mornings, particularly in low-lying and rural areas. Drivers should watch for slick roads overnight, especially where heavier rain falls this evening.

No hazardous weather is expected beyond tonight, but residents are urged to protect sensitive plants later this week as frost development becomes likely.
